Alternately called points or obelisks, these towers are cut and polished from chalcedony. I prefer to pick towers with open cavities that reveal the mineral structure, and this material has fascinating open boxwork (honeycomb-like) structures, the pockets lined with quartz druzy. Chalcedony is a cryptocrystalline form of quartz; like a geode the chalcedony formed first, with larger quartz crystals forming as the crystallization process slowed.
This material commonly goes by the name "sphalerite quartz," but isn't believed to actually involve sphalerite. It varies in appearance, with off-white tones contrasting with gray, dark brown, and near-black pattern. Some have fine veining, while others have bold, chunky colors.
Surface imperfections: this material appears to be on the soft side for chalcedony, not the right quality to achieve a shiny polish. The surface is matte, and I have observed scrape-like polish lines are apparent on many towers. Many have lightly chipped or dulled points.
Note: Towers like this are often cut haphazardly and may not stand straight. In images showing a right angle over the tower, the piece has been rotated to show the most off-square angle.
