Huernia procumbens x
Huernia procumbens x
Family Apocynaceae
Subfamily Asclepiadoideae
Tribe Ceropegieae
Genus Huernia
Species Procumbens x*
Common name(s) Shooting star flower
* This variant is commonly sold as huernia procumbens, but is actually a procumbens hybrid of unknown lineage. This hybrid has matte yellow-cream flowers with a light blush of red in the center as seen in images. The proper procumbens has a vivid red raised center (annulus) similar to the flower of huernia zebrina.
As indicated in the word root 'cumb' meaning 'to lie down,' procumbens is a low crawling plant. Central stems can reach a few inches tall, but additional stems growing out the sides lean over and snake across the ground. This variety seems to grow a bit slower than the average huernia, and when distressed it can go into an odd 'stasis' I haven't seen in other varieties. I have a cutting rescued from a sick plant that has refused to grow or put out roots for the better part of a year now, but also refuses to die and hasn't even shriveled ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Stapeliads often hyper-extend their petals, stretching back behind the center of the flower when open. The procumbens flower's tendency to do this earned it the nickname "shooting star flower."
