Also known as hematite or ferruginous (iron-bearing) quartz, this unusual red quartz cluster gets its color from oxidized hematite. Hematite can manifest in multiple ways: as a color-causing agent in the quartz creating tones of red, orange, black, and brown; growing small red or black spots inside the quartz; or growing as a matte layer on the surface of the quartz.

This quartz initially was colorless, but a change occurred during the growth process that introduced hematite inclusions, making the newer growth red. Broken crystals reveal a glassy clear interior bordered by a layer of red-tinted quartz. Some red quartz produces a sort of phantom effect like this where you can see the hematite layer under the surface of the quartz.

Red quartz is typically a duller brick-red color, but this specimen is one of the favorites I've seen due to its gorgeous ultra lustrous deep red color. One side of the cluster has shining crystal faces, and the other side is coated in glittering hematite-included quartz druzy polka-dotted with black hematite spots.
