Armadillidium klugii "Montenegro Clown" Isopod
Armadillidium klugii "Montenegro Clown" Isopod
Armadillidium klugii "Montenegro Clown" has a striking combination of spots and colors. They have a red (orange-brown) skirt on a black body, with three rows of white spots down its back. The center spots are yellow instead on some isopods, producing a mayo & mustard mix. According to Orin McMonigle's Isopod Zoology, it's believed this patterning may be mimicry of the European black widow spider.
Montenegro Clowns are one of my favorites. They are pretty friendly and unafraid of handling. Clowns are a great option for a display terrarium over a bin set-up because of their boldness. They have a tendency to "greet light" and stand up in curiosity when you shine light on them (I mean, don't blind the poor guys). They also are one of the more publicly amorous isopods, so you will see a lot of mate-guarding.
