This type of picture jasper is sourced from the High Atlas Mountains of Morocco, which is why it is called Atlas Mountain jasper (or variants on that name). It is often sold as mookaite jasper because mookaite can have similar colors. True mookaite comes from Australia, and typically has chunkier pattern and a darker, bolder color palette. In Atlas Mountain Jasper, bold patterns of dark red-brown coloration is caused by iron that crept into cracks and colored the jasper before the cavities filled in with white chalcedony (quartz). These patterns contrast against a light background of peachy-yellow sunset hues.

“Picture jasper” refers to jasper with interesting patterns with vivid colors of veining, brecciation, or dendrites. There are quite a few colors and varieties of picture jasper, but key to the definition is that the patterns look almost like images, or landscape scenery such as trees, a garden, or a lake shore. It’s more of a Rorschach test than a literal image—I see a kitty in G!

Slices of picture jasper make a beautiful and unique display piece for your collection. These slabs have been polished to reveal their pattern, but have a relatively dull luster (from what I've observed, the material doesn't seem to take a “high polish” easily). Some show circular polish marks. Option C gets the "ugly duckling" discount for having an especially flat appearance.
