This calcite specimen from Santa Eulalia is a lovely deep red color from hematite (iron oxide) inclusions. An irregular-shaped piece of matrix is covered in glittering red calcite druzy on both sides, and in cracks on the sides.
Studied closely, this piece has well-formed crystals with beautiful geometry. The druzy is in fact composed of small intersecting pyramid-shaped calcite crystals with beveled edges. There are also calcite rhombohedrons and tabular crystals in the mix, but the bulk of the growth is triangular.
** Brittle warning! This material is brittle and may shed pieces, limit handling.
** Staining warning! The soft oxidized matrix exposed on the sides will leave red-brown dusty staining on surfaces.
