Calcite with red, black, and colorless druzy
Calcite with red, black, and colorless druzy
Locale: Santa Eulalia, Chihuahua, Mexico
Approx dimensions: 4.75 x 3 x 1.25"
Approx weight: 218g
This is one of my favorites of the Santa Eulalia calcite material. The specimen has formed botryoidal (round, bubbly) shapes composed of a speckled combination of red, black, and light yellow crystals. Under magnification they appear to be intersecting rhombs of calcite, some heavily included with hematite which causes both the black and vivid red colors. The red and black crystals are mostly matte but there is some glitter to the druzy.
Several larger calcite crystals have grown on the surface. They have a yellowish coloration under the surface with some transparency, and are included with the red and black material.
** Staining warning! The soft matrix on the back will leave red-brown dusty staining on surfaces. I really mean it with this piece, look at my hand in the photos!
