Genus Huernia
Species schneideriana
Common name(s) Red dragon flower
Huernia schneideriana is one of the more common stapeliads in the hobby. It is a robust fast grower and the tips of its bright green stems can take on beautiful orange-yellow stress coloration. The stems grow upright until their weight pulls them over and they begin to trail or hang.
Schneideriana flowers readily once established, producing buds off and on from the spring through the fall blooming season. It has deep red star-shaped flowers that fade in color at the tips. The scent is subtle but unpleasant, fishy like a fishtank that needs to be cleaned. Like other stapeliads, flies are the pollinators and will leave maggots in blooms. The flowers can temporarily "trap" flies as part of the pollination process (as was the case with the fly in the images).
