Protein is a key component of the isopod food pyramid. Some varieties of isopods can resort to cannibalism if they aren't regularly given supplemental protein.
Isopods really don't need to eat all these different things to be healthy, but testing different options can help you find the proteins your colony best responds to. These nutrition sampler packs are perfect if you're like me and enjoy offering your isopods new foods to see how they'll react. My porcellio expansus fought over the potato cubes!
The bags of freeze-dried peas are truly stuffed about as full as I could get them and still seal the bag. It is hard to go wrong with freeze dried peas, and they will likely be one of the staples of your isopods' diet.
These samplers are designed for a beginner or someone without many isopods. If you only have one or two cultures, they will last you a long time. If you have—or plan to have—a lot of isopods, don't waste your time here. You can find most of these in bulk sizes as human foods or supplements. Don't want to buy a 1 lb bin of pea protein just to check if your bugs will eat it? Yeah I know a guy who can get you an ounce of that.
Note: the powders, yeast especially, are prone to bloom mold quickly. Feed in small amounts that will be eaten quickly. Place it in a dry area and use a feeding dish that can be washed.
