These are the isopod treats that don't exactly fall into the other nutrition categories:

  • Bee pollen should be treated like isopod candy and given as an occasional treat. They can get quite excited about it, and the small pieces provide a great viewing opportunity to watch your isopods play games of keep-away and drag the chunks to their burrow holes.
  • Spirulina is vitamin-dense and high in protein. Humans use it as a supplement because it is thought to be a good anti-oxidant and boost for the immune system. Spirulina is a key ingredient in Repashy's Morning Wood—another great nutrition option popular with isopods!
  • Crab meal provides calcium and other nutrients, and is high in chitin. Chitin is supposed to improve the health of bioactive soils and inhibit the development of soil gnat larvae. Mix into your soil or offer as a treat. My A. granulatums came out of the literal and proverbial woodwork for this stuff!
  • Worm castings are nutrient-rich and improve soil health. Mix into the dirt as a soil amendment, or sprinkle a spoonful in on top as a treat. Castings shouldn't be a major component of your substrate though, as isopod keepers report it can make the soil muddy or heavy and dense.

These samplers are designed for a beginner or someone without many isopods. If you only have one or two cultures, they will last you a long time. If you have—or plan to have—a lot of isopods, don't waste your time here. You can find many of these in bulk sizes as human supplements or garden soil amendments. Don't want to buy 10 lbs of worm castings for one culture? Yeah I know a guy who can get you a few ounces of that.
