Peperomia prostrata "String of Turtles"
Peperomia prostrata "String of Turtles"
Family Piperaceae
Genus Peperomia
Species prostrata
Common name(s) String of Turtles
String of Turtles seems to have some range of presentations, but I sought out this type with delicate green turtle-pattern pads. The succulent-like leaves grow fat with water, and have a gorgeous gemmy translucency and iridescence to them.
The plant is a vine that trails or hangs. When it blooms it produces a long thin upright stalks. As a peperomia, string of turtles does well in mid-to-high humidity terrariums. More than well! Between the humidity, heat lamp, and UV light for my lizard, my plant grew like a weed. For best results I recommend a bright window or supplemental grow light. Lanky growth with pale or small leaves will tell you it could use more light.
The delicate strings of this variant can easily break during transplanting or handling, but that kinda just means you have two plants now! Cuttings root ridiculously easily in appropriate conditions. Most vines need a node to root, but Peperomia prostrata can start new plants from leaves that have popped off. I put broken stems and pieces in moist sphagnum moss to root.
Options: The "parent" plant you will receive a cutting from is pictured. Options are for a cutting rooted or unrooted, measuring minimum three inches.
