Mined from the ancient volcanic fields of northern Arizona, this is what is called vesicular basalt, referring to the classic 'volcanic rock' style of basalt that is full of cavities left behind by gas bubbles. Lava rock is lightweight and retains moisture well, making it well-suited for a variety of purposes.

These 1" cinders are a good option in chunky soil mixes for larger cacti and succulents, with plenty of bubble holes for roots to anchor into, and retaining low levels of moisture more appropriate for desert species. Some people even use lava cinders as an inexpensive substitute for horticultural clay pellets. The rock's porous qualities make it a favorite for carnivorous plant bogs, wicking up surrounding water to keep plants hydrated.

Volcanic rock is an excellent addition to isopod terrariums for similar reasons: its ability to stay lightly damp makes it a popular piece of decor, even in arid tanks. I pop a couple pieces in each of my colonies. This is also a good 'construction' size for building small retaining walls and structures in your terrarium.

Lava rock is fairly lightweight, with some pieces even capable of floating. This helps to keep tanks from getting too heavy. Bubble holes provide caves for smaller isopod species to explore. Frass can accumulate in the holes over time, but I simply brush piece off with a dry toothbrush whenever the tank gets a deep clean.

⚠️ Volcanic rock is rough and can be sharp, so it isn't recommended for terrariums with pets that are prone to injury (i.e. NOT a good pick for a betta fish tank!). Realistically, even though injuries are possible, rough materials are part of nature and most creatures know how to navigate them. Lava rock also retains heat well, and should be used with caution around heat lamps to avoid burns.
