  • Option C, a near-square rectangular piece of sandstone with thin dark iron bands in a spiral-like formation, with faint curved layering fanning off them in a saturated orang-red sandstone. There is a patch of near-white sandstone with thin layering inside a ring of iron banding in the upper left corner.
  • Option D, a long rectangular slab with vibrant red-orange color, divided diagonally into two patterns. The bottom left has broad parallel layering across it, while the upper right side has complex layers of scallop patterning with swirling brown and red tones, and edged with thin dark iron bands.
  • Option E, a slightly long rectangle with lighter orange-red coloration that fades to near-white in a gradient between each thin dark iron band crossing the piece horizontally. The sandstone has faint curved layering.
  • Option F, a slightly long rectangle with light coloration. It has bright red-orange layering fanning out from thick dark iron bands that snake diagonally across the piece, forming some scallop patterning. The sandstone fades in a gradient to near white, providing nice contrast.
  • Option G, a rectangular slab with two bold dark iron bands across the middle, curved and scalloped. The sandstone is a darker brown tone below the lower line, and a more vibrant orange above, with very good curving layering. Above the top line, light layers sweep across in a broad curve, appearing like sky over rows of hills.
  • Option H, a standard rectangle with very good pattern, darker red-brown thin layers curve across the piece, with a bold dark iron band running across the bottom, like a landscape with broad sky over it. Below the line is a deeper red-orange color, and above is near white in a gradient deepening to darker brown-red. There is some scallop pattern in the upper right.
  • Option I, a standard rectangle with good vibrant orange-red color. Thin layers sweep diagonally across the middle of the piece, with looping and scallop patterns along the edges, accented with thin dark iron bands.
  • Option J, a long rectangular piece with simple pattern, that is mostly a red-orange color without layering. The color fades to near-white along one edge of several thin dark iron bands that snake across the surface.
  • Option K, a long panoramic rectangular piece with good orange-red color saturation. The pattern is split in half diagonally across the piece, so the bottom right corner has broad parallel layering across it, while the upper left side has complex scallop patterning edged with thin dark iron bands, like mountains in the background.
  • Option L, a slab that is different from the rest in shape and color. The shape is a squat rectangle with rounded corners, the edge slightly wiggly and left rough in a rustic style. The piece is a deeper brown color with less orange-red tint compared to the rest, but has an interesting irregular pattern of dark iron banding through it, outlining a light patch of sandstone shaped like a mushroom. Subtle layering curves through the deeper brown sandstone.

These flat polished slabs of picture sandstone are made from Arizona Sierra sandstone sourced from central Arizona. Sandstone is a sedimentary rock composed of sand compacted and cemented together through geological processes, giving it a grainy texture. 

Sandstone with distinct layering like this is often called ‘picture stone’ because the layers can resemble a southwestern landscape. Flat slabs put the layering on display and make for a beautiful natural piece of decor.

The orange-red coloration of this material is caused by oxidized iron. People often assume “Arizona Sierra” simply refers to the material’s locale, but it’s actually a trade name for sandstone from this locale that has been heat-treated to intensify its red color.
