  • Option D, a wide rectangle in portrait, with very good curving layers in high contrast. A thin dark iron band cuts across the surface diagonally near the top right corner, the sandstone below with vivid orange-red layering. The top corner is near white, lightly speckled, and has light red-orange wispy layers curving across like aurora in the sky over a mountinside.
  • Option E, a standard rectangular slab with a dark blobby formation of dark iron banding and deep orange-red sandstone with curving layers in the bottom left corner. Lighter orange layers run horizontally on the left edge of the piece, then blend into curling bulbous forms. The top right is light in color with light layering.
  • Option F, a standard rectangular slab with a nice blend of red-orange and peachy-pink tones. A thick dark iron band cut across two thirds of the piece, with diagonal layering in the red sandstone below, and broad curved layering above like a sunrise. Above the dark line, the sandstone is much lighter on the left edge and then grows darker red-orange in a gradient toward the bottom right.
  • Option G, a long rectangular slab with deep coloration. The piece has a more abstract pattern than most, with a thick wiggly curving dark iron band bordering a patch of saturated orange-red sandstone that covers most of the face. The layering in this area appears like a stack of thick half circles that begin compressing, while the rest of the sandstone around this formation is a light orange-red with thin straight parallel layers.
  • Option H, a long rectangular slab with a nice blend of red-orange and peachy-pink tones. A thick dark iron band curves across the center of the piece, with parallel thin bold layering in the red sandstone below. Above the dark line, the sandstone is much lighter and then grow darker in a gradient toward the top, with light layering running diagonally.

These flat polished slabs of picture sandstone are made from Arizona Sierra sandstone sourced from central Arizona. Sandstone is a sedimentary rock composed of sand compacted and cemented together through geological processes, giving it a grainy texture. 

Sandstone with distinct layering like this is often called ‘picture stone’ because the layers can resemble a southwestern landscape. Flat slabs put the layering on display and make for a beautiful natural piece of decor.

The orange-red coloration of this material is caused by oxidized iron. People often assume “Arizona Sierra” simply refers to the material’s locale, but it’s actually a trade name for sandstone from this locale that has been heat-treated to intensify its red color.
